and it has suddenly become OK to tell these people off again. it has become OK to separate from them, fire them for having low character, and require that they leave the civilized company of others.1

Jimmy Kimmel can say whatever he wants…and Disney can fire him if they want. They can hire them back if they want. Anyone can say whatever they want. Doctors during Covid attacked the vaccine and paid a price for doing so. They did it anyway because they believed what they were saying was the truth. They were de-platformed, lost their jobs, doxxed and attacked on social media. They kept speaking.
The Left never talked about free speech then. The best they could muster was it’s “misinformation” and “disinformation” or, even worse, “malinformation” and besides, they opined, Twitter is a private company.
In 2020 I posted a link on Facebook to a lawsuit regarding the stolen election. It took only a few seconds for me to receive notice my post had been blocked and that if I didn’t delete it my Facebook account would not be reinstated. I left Facebook that day. Cancelled my account. That was before the Biden administration got involved dictating how online companies should handle inconvenient truths.
Gavin Newsom signed a bill to limit and punish doctor’s free speech (it was never implemented…too much blow back). But he signed it. It could have easily become law here in California. He acted like Kimmel’s firing was the end of the Republic. I’m looking around and it appears it’s still here.
If I have a friend who lies all the time, they’re exercising their free speech. There’s no law that says my friend can’t lie to me about his past or any number of other things. However, if I find out he’s lying, I have the prerogative not to associate with him. I can choose to remove him from my life. He still has free speech. He can continue lying as much as he wants, even lie to me if sees me on the street somewhere. But I am under no obligation to keep him as friend or keep seeing him or believe his lies. I may even tell other people he’s a liar—exercising my free speech.
These useful idiots who celebrated Charlie Kirk’s death have every right to do that. Go for it. Post it on social media. They can dance and sing and laugh and whatever else they think will signal to their tribe how virtuous they are.
But they should beware. If they miscalculate how far the overton window has shifted (which they have) they will find themselves on the receiving end of disassociation: from employers, friends, clubs, family and maybe even the tribe they’re used to impressing with their shock value “hot takes.”
If I’m an employer and I think their online indiscretions may harm my business, I have every right to fire them. If their comments make by conservative employees feel unsafe, I have every right to fire them. I’m a private business…remember?
They still have free speech. They can continue their tirades on social media as long as they want until they have alienated themselves from decent people (the majority of us) who believe celebrating Kirk’s death is wrong. Maybe they’ll lose their job and maybe even their self-respect—that latter is probably going too far.
But the overton window is moving…it’s moving pretty fast now. That protection the woke mob is used to—it’s disappearing. Mainstream culture won’t celebrate them for much longer.
Free speech does not protect one from consequences.
We’re fed up with the bullshit we’ve been putting up with for the last four years: men in women sports, men can get pregnant, drag shows for kids, sex changes, the denigration of Christianity, pronouns, men in women’s bathrooms, calling for violence against political opponents and on and on.
Almost a hundred Democrats in congress wouldn’t sign on for a moment of silence for Charlie Kirk. We are not the same.
But it’s coming to an end. I suspect many of the woke mob will fall in line because they are captive to peer pressure. I don’t care why they fall in the line as long as they do.
Many won’t. They’ll suffer the consequences of their bad behavior—as they should.
