New advisory on terrorism from the DHS. False or misleading narratives: who decides?

Apparently we need another government acronym. Maybe this one has been around, but I don’t remember seeing it: MDM. This stands for: mis- dis- and mal-information. The new advisory entitled “Summary of Terrorism Threat to the U.S. Homeland” has a number of interesting statements that many others have reported (I have no original thoughts, except, possibly, a pizza recipe I devised back in 1993).

Here are some of those statements:

Key factors contributing to the current heightened threat environment include:

  1. The proliferation of false or misleading narratives, which sow discord or undermine public trust in U.S. government institutions:
    • For example, there is widespread online proliferation of false or misleading narratives regarding unsubstantiated widespread election fraud and COVID-19. Grievances associated with these themes inspired violent extremist attacks during 2021.

Who decides what is false or misleading? If we had a fair press there could be real and open debate about these two major issues: election fraud and COVID-19. Clearly, that is not the case. And it is also clear in this document where the DHS stands on these issues.

Far from being unsubstantiated, election fraud continues to be proven in many, many states including those that were not swing states. Download Peter Navarro’s Voter Fraud Report (5MB) PDF, opens new window or the Election 2020 Grassroots Canvass Report (0.75MB) PDF, opens new window for Arizona.

DHS is working with public and private sector partners, as well as foreign counterparts, to identify and evaluate MDM, including false or misleading narratives and conspiracy theories spread on social media and other online platforms that endorse or could inspire violence.

Again, we know what the DHS considers as misleading.

A concept that pops up a fair amount in this document is a warning that MDM will “undermine public trust in government institutions.” This appears four times. Trust in the government has declined to new lows after the last 2 years. I wonder why? Wear masks. Don’t wear masks. Close your business for two weeks. Nah, let’s do it for a month. How about a year? How about you just lose your business and go work at Walmart? That works for us. Get the jab or lose your job! Make your kids wear masks in school. We’re very disappointed in all you unvaccinated scum.

Yeah, that trust just keeps building.
